The Gathering

The Gathering (formerly called the Roundup under U.S. Fish & Wildlife) is a massive gathering of the bison herd held every two years in October. During this time, bison are brought into the corrals for vet checks and genetic testing. As part of the bison herd management plan originally implemented under USFW, individuals deemed surplus are auctioned off to other conservation herds or to private owners. Though the Gathering has been open to the public in the past, there is some concern that large crowds can cause additional stress to the bison.
